“Laurence-isms”

Success is not a self-driving vehicle. It won’t just steer itself. It doesn’t coast on autopilot. It needs your hands on the wheel.

And yet, so many of us try to outwork the machine. We chase titles, deadlines, inbox zero while leaving our own mental, physical, & emotional maintenance running on fumes.

I get it. All of you ambitious executives, founders, performers and leaders have been told success means sacrifice. And to some extent, it does. Yet, if your version of success runs you into burnout, breakdown, or identity loss, it’s not sustainable.

The truth is: success requires drive. Not just the drive to do more, but the wisdom to stop, refuel, and realign.

Your career doesn’t have to come at the cost of your peace, relationships, or identity. The best leaders I know aren’t just high performers…they’re high stewards of their time, energy, and values.

So ask yourself: Are you driving success, or is it driving you?

Let’s recalibrate. Let’s go further. Not just in business, but in life.

Tips to Go Further: Here’s one step you can take to make sure you go the extra mile.

Try to limit your screen time before bed by putting away all electronic devices around an hour before sleeping. It sounds simple enough and if you know me well then you know I do NOT always abide by this. I pride myself on constantly being available for friends, family, clients and sometimes reading or acquiring knowledge that may or may not become useful like this one: The Ancient Romans used to drop a piece of toast into their wine for good health. Hence why we now “raise a toast.” As often as I enjoy creating, laughing, and thinking at night, I can attest that when I’m away from my phone, I can give myself alone time and get to a better zone. Shutting things down before bed has numerous benefits. Our bodies produce cortisol when we perceive light, keeping us awake and alert. Cortisol levels typically peak after 30 minutes of exposure and returns to baseline levels 60-90 minutes after exposure. Conversely, our bodies produce melatonin at night, which makes us sleepy. Overexposure to light sources above 10 lux (which is more than any screen setting, including night mode) can lead to disruptions in slow-wave sleep and throughout night because of increased cortisol.

Tools to Go Further

Time blocking is an incredible strategy if you find yourself managing multiple responsibilities or feel like you only work on tasks as you receive them. With time blocking, you divide your day into chunks where each block of time is task-specific, providing you with greater structure and boosting productivity as a result.

Different Ways of Time Blocking

  • You can time block by dividing your day into chunks of time and dedicating each block to a specific activity.

    • For example, I might set aside an hour every day from 1-2 PM to shoot content for my brand.

  • You can also group similar tasks to get done during the same time block.

    • For example, instead of only shooting footage from 1-2PM, you could block off 1-3 PM on your calendar daily to shoot and edit content. Maybe you’ll shoot from 1-2PM and edit from 2-3PM. Maybe you’ll shoot one video and edit right after.

  • You could set a fixed amount of time to work on a larger task and aim to complete as much as possible. This is a fun way to challenge yourself to complete work.

    • For example, I will write my first draft of this proposal between 10-11 AM. Then, it becomes a race against the clock to finish my proposal. I often use this strategy when I know I have to do something I’m not as excited about – I find myself continuing to work on the task for the sake of finishing it even after my self-imposed time block!

NEW METHOD ALERT  🚨: I have become far more productive and efficient using the Pomodoro Method. Many people who I look up to have embraced this method of time blocking and management to increase their efficiency. I am a notorious procrastinator (or can be) and have found this method to significantly improve my planning and task completion. Simply put, the Pomodoro Method is a time management method that uses a timer to break down work into focused 25-minute intervals (called "pomodoros") separated by short breaks. Instead of checking my phone or any other external source, I become focused on the task at hand for 25 mins. When I’m done, I can take a quick 5-10 minute break and then go back to either complete the task or start a new one. I love this for those who are easily distracted and I’ve recommended it to clients who say they end up making it a game to see how much they can accomplish in their 25 min periods. You’ll be surprised what we can get done when we put our minds…or the clock to it! Give it a try and let me know how you enjoy it.

Some Exciting Updates!

Last year, October 2024, I enrolled in the renowned Canada Coach Academy’s coaching course and school, led by the brilliant owner, founder, and MCC coach, Nathalie Blais. To say it was a masterclass would be underselling it. This experience sharpened my technique, equipped me with new methods and tools, and gave me insights that will only amplify my ability to serve my clients at the highest level. I had the privilege of learning alongside an extraordinary group of peers that included CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs, and leaders from all walks of life. The next step? Securing my next level of certification through the ICF (International Coaching Federation) with the ultimate goal of becoming the absolute best coach in the world today…bar none. I serve my clients and I have the best purpose and career a man could ask for. I’m grateful, I’m energized, and I’m ready, as always, to go further.

Thanks for stopping by and making the time. It means more than you know. Feel free to share and see you next issue!
