Going Further: The Coaching Newsletter

Issue XI: The Windshield vs The Rearview

I’d love to start this newsletter with an announcement that has been a long time coming…

I’m officially a PCC-certified coach 🎓!

After hundreds of hours, a mountain of coaching conversations, and more growth than I can explain here: I’ve earned my Professional Certified Coach (PCC) designation from the International Coaching Federation.

Coaching isn’t just something I do…it’s how I show up in the world.

This milestone means a tremendous amount to me. Not just because of the certification itself, but because it reflects the heart behind the work.

I’ve sat across from leaders navigating chaos. Founders chasing clarity. Individuals rebuilding after things broke. I’ve walked with them through tough moments, big wins, and quiet pivots. And this certification is one more way I sharpen the tools I use to help people Go Further. I’m fortunate enough to serve teams and individuals I respect. Every single high-performing group and client deserves the best and my commitment is to ensure they and you have it!

To every client who’s trusted me…thank you.
To every person I haven’t worked with yet…just know: I’m only getting started.

Tools to Go Further: The Year-End Audit

It’s hard to visualize your development without reflecting on your past wins and learnings. To effectively goal set for 2026, ask yourself these key questions about 2025. These questions are designed to challenge your assumptions and feelings, so you can approach your 2026 visions with greater clarity.

  • When did you choose courage over comfort? What helped you move forward when things felt unclear?

  • When did my confidence help build trust, influence, or clarity for others?

  • When did self-doubt show up for me this year? What did that inner voice say, and what evidence did 2025 give me proving that I am capable?

I’ve shared these questions and many others in a Fear-Less worksheet, where my clients conduct a full audit of their confidence throughout 2026, and we strategize to find new ways to grow. For the full Fear-Less worksheet, shoot me an email [email protected] and I’ll send it over!

🗣 Laurence‑ism: Windshield & Rear-View

For years, I had a theory I privately shared with friends, clients, leaders and anyone who came to me for counsel.

I’d say:
“Be more windshield than rearview.”

Keep moving forward. Eyes ahead. No looking back.
It made sense, especially when I was trying to outrun things like: disappointment; fear; failure; insecurity; and even grief.
Truthfully? That mindset helped me at times survive. It gave me momentum when standing still felt dangerous.

But I’ve come to realize: I wasn’t entirely right.

If all you do is stare through the windshield, you miss something important.
You miss where you’ve come from.
You miss the lessons that got you here.
You miss the patterns, the red flags, the small pivots that would’ve helped you navigate the road ahead with more wisdom.
And sometimes? The very thing you're trying to avoid in the rearview is the exact lesson that helps you navigate what’s ahead.

Now, let me also be clear friends…you can’t drive your life stuck in the past either.
There are people we all know who are (and have been) so locked into their rearview mirror that they never take their foot off the brake. Still reacting to old patterns. Still haunted by old stories and narratives. Ultimately, still stuck.

That’s not the goal either.

The real skill is knowing how to use both mirrors.

High-performers and high-functioning individuals and teams look forward and behind. Personally, romantically and professionally.

They look forward intentionally: with vision, clarity, and ambition.
But they also glance back reflectively: to remember, to celebrate, and to learn.

Windshield is where you’re going.
Rearview reminds you of what you’ve already made it through.
And when you use both? You move with purpose, not just speed.

So here’s what I believe now:

Your past isn’t your prison.
But it can be your blueprint…if you’re brave enough to look at it.

You don’t have to pick one mirror.
You just have to be aware of when to use each.

If you’re only looking ahead, you’re missing the full picture.
And if you’re only looking back, you’re not going anywhere.

We don’t just want forward motion. We want forward meaning. In life, in love, in work and beyond.

The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it…or learn from it.”
